It's that time of year again. Like an irresistible annual rhythm, I find myself forced once more to create a character that walks the line between human and tree. This year, that concept took the form of “Shadow Root.”

For me, these kinds of drawings are more than just a distraction during the train commute. They are a way of expressing the idea that nature does not exist for our enjoyment, to be trampled on and gawked at. It is unforgiving, unpredictable, and sometimes downright scary.
I hope "Shadow Root" invites you to reflect on the troubled relationship between humans and nature—and on the hidden beauty and horror that exists within it, and perhaps even within us.
