I'm always learning as I draw, but I think I've created something special with my latest work, “Blossom of Bones”. The idea behind this work is to show that there can be beauty and growth even in death.
When working on this piece, I was inspired by the mythological figure of Athena, the goddess of war. I wanted to incorporate her helmet into the design, but I also wanted to incorporate something new through the organic design.
As the goddess of war, I wanted to make a reference to the mortal through the skulls in “Blossom of Bones”. The skulls gradually became part of the environment in the drawing process from simple dispersed objects. In this way, the character is not only surrounded by life and growth, but also by the death that is inherent in it.
The figure is drawn almost entirely in white pastel pencil. I experimented with new techniques while working on this piece and I am quite happy with the result.
I mainly drew this work on the train on the way to work. I think it's fair to say that “Blossom of Bones” attracted a bit of attention on the train before it was even finished.
