We often notice a picture only for a moment, in fractions of a second. Yet there is a story behind every drawing, behind every work of art. And today I would like to tell you the story behind my new drawing “Mindbreaker”.
As some of you know, my drawings are created almost exclusively during my commute to work. What you can't see, feel or smell here are the circumstances in which they were created.
The smell of canned beer, kebabs and fast food brought by fellow travelers or the tight space as I squeeze into a corner to sharpen my pencil on a crowded train.
Nor do you feel the (minor or major) pain when a backpack hits you in the face. Or the anger when I'm kicked off my little tripod chair because I'm only allowed to stand and not sit.
Ich kann euch nicht die Kälte des Windes am Bahnsteig vermitteln, der meine Finger beim Zeichnen einfrieren ließ, während die S-Bahn mal wieder Verspätung hatte.
In moments like these, I need an outlet. And for me, drawing is a wonderful way to get my thoughts and feelings out of my head and onto paper. “Mindbreaker” is a reflection of these experiences, an expression of the challenges and small victories of everyday life.
And yes, I keep telling myself: “On to the next adventure!” With canned beer, crowds, cold and all the other challenges. Because that's what art is all about: the ability to process and interpret reality and transform it into something new and beautiful.
